The UPDF has confirmed that one of its soldiers was killed in an operation against Congolese rebels early Friday morning.

According to the Army and Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs spokesperson Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso, the soldier was killed in attempts to repulse at least 20 men who has attacked the Zeu Detach in Zombo District while disguised as forest workers.

At least three other UPDF soldiers were injured and airlifted to the Bombo General Military Hospital for treatment.

Byekwaso revealed that the Army managed to capture two of the attackers believed to belong to the CODECO rebel group, and also killed six of their colleagues in the 6am operation.

The army is also in possession of an SMG with 11 rounds of ammunition, 11 bows and arrows as well as three machetes, according to Byekwaso

CODECO is said to comprise Lendu armed gangs who closely work with Ugandan informers to launch attacks.

The UPDF has called for calm, with Byekwaso assuring Ugandans the armed forces were closely working with their DRC counterparts to track the rebels that had sneaked back into Congo.
